The DG-1001E successfully performed its maiden flight in the beginning of July. The DG-1001’s new version with FES-System by LZ Design was piloted by Jelmer Wassenaar, Head of Engineering at DG. The glider took-off with 18m neo wing tips and small FES Batteries (2x 14S / 4,2kWh).

The sustainer system worked perfectly right from the beginning. On both seats there is a FES control unit including main switch which enables controlling the system from both seats. Equivalent to the single-seater system the pilot may use the motor easily by activating the main switch and turning the rpm potentiometer. Instantly the motor will start and bring the glider back to safe altitude.

With the small battery we currently achieve around 15 minutes of climb at 1m/s. Alternatively the pilot can do level flight at 105km/h for half an hour. In order to significantly increase this performance we wait for bigger batteries to be cleared for use in the DG-1001. According to the latest EASA standards the batteries need to run through different tests successfully before they may be used in flight. These tests are not completed yet. The new 20m neo wing tips will be ready for test flights.

We already had the chance to deliver the first customer aircraft. FSR Kraichgau is the first proud owner of a DG-1001E neo since one week now. Besides FES, the glider is equipped with a handicap system. Thanks to the cooperation with “Aktion Mensch” (a German social organization) and DG Flugzeugbau, Martin Koehl the club’s handicapped pilot will also be able to take-off in this beautiful glider.

At present, DG Flugzeugbau conducts flight tests for certifying the DG-1001E for aerobatics. In order to fulfil its role as versatile aircraft, it will still be possible to perform aerobatics in 17.2m configuration and without FES batteries.

As soon as the new 20m neo tips are available we will also begin offering test flights and are very much looking forward to see our customers taking a ride!
